LEADERS IN QUALITY GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

ABOUT

ABOUT

EACOM has over 20 years experiences in Geotechnical Engineering.  We have capacity for solving civil and environmental problems for complicated highway projects, power industry in generation and transmission, natural gas and petroleum industry, etc.  We are certified DBE firm by Indiana Department of Transportation, and certified WBE and MBE by Department of Administration of Indiana State.

EACOM is experienced in numerous foundation types for highway structures, such as shallowfoundation, mat foundation, drilled shafts, concrete filled pipe piles, square pre-cast concrete piles, auger cast piles, micropiles with soil and rock sockets, caissons, and short piers. EACOM is also experienced in ground improvement technology, including soil mixing, stone columns and grouting. Some staff had received post-graduate degrees specifically in Geotechnical Engineering, and well trained in dealing with complex Geotechnical Engineering projects

QUALIFICATIONS

EACOM, LLC is prequalified to provide consulting services to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), Department of Administration (DOA) and other agencies/cities/companies currently.  We are also Indiana State certified DBE, MBE and WBE firm.

EACOM is INDOT certified DBE firm, and is in the process of applying MBE and WBE of State of Indiana, City of Indianapolis and federal certification.

EACOM has extensive experiences in Geotechnical Engineering, and qualified for providing comprehensive Geotechnical Engineering services to INDOT.

EACOM understands AASHTO LRFD procedures, FHWA publications and INDOT regulations well.   Typically, AASHTO LRFD manual set up industry general accepted guidelines without details which made it possible for consultants to perform design quite differently.  FHWA publications reflect AASHTO guidelines while introducing leading models of specifications from state agencies in certain design categories.  Consultants usually follow design procedures according to existing references which create design options with varying engineering risks.  EACOM had knowledge of common practices and mistakes in the process, which could help INDOT regulate the design and review process, educate consultants about new specifications, and continue to improve INDOT specifications.

Typical Geotechnical Engineering consultants follow their company-specific engineering procedures, which may not be the optimal process in industry.  EACOM’s unique experiences on the client side will help EACOM serve INDOT selecting the best practice in Geotechnical Engineering.

Past Experiences

EACOM is experienced with numerous foundation types for highway structures, such as shallow foundation, mat foundation, drilled shafts, concrete filled pipe piles, square pre-cast concrete piles, auger cast piles, micropiles with soil and rock sockets, caissons, and short piers.  EACOM is also experienced in ground improvement technology, including soil mixing, stone columns and grouting.  Our staff had been well trained in Geotechnical Engineering, and are capable to deal with complex Geotechnical Engineering projects.

Understanding highway projects requirement

EACOM is very familiar with INDOT Geotechnical Engineering manual, INDOT design manual, INDOT Standard Specifications and special provisions.  EACOM also has decent understanding of AASHTO LRFD procedures, federal highway design publication series, and design codes.  EACOM is confident to meet INDOT specific requirement for projects.

Depth of Experiences in Geotechnical Engineering

EACOM has staff of professionals who are experienced in Geotechnical Engineering solutions.  Our professionals are experienced in typical geotechnical engineering analysis methods as well as numerical modeling of sophisticated problems, such as finite difference method and finite element method for foundation and embankment analysis.  We are experienced in characteristics and engineering behaviors of soil and rock, therefore we are able to find the best solutions for each project.

QULIFICATIONS

QA/QC

We will make sure that all engineering and field activities are performed in accordance with approved contract documents.  All material testing records, sampling and testing procedures, testing frequency, testing parameters and sampling locations, surveying data, evaluation reports are well maintained and submitted upon completion of projects.

For construction related QC/QA activities, all materials, construction tolerances and submittals will be maintained together with project drawings and specifications and submitted to INDOT after project completion.

All EACOM professionals are well trained QC/QA experts, and we are confident we are able to meet project specific quality control requirements.

HEALTH and SAFETY

Health and Safety are the first priority for EACOM.  For each project, the project team will analyze all potential hazards and work out hazard prevention methods with each team members, list all preventive protection equipment needed, and work procedures to ensure work be completed safely.  Specialized training may be outsourced depending on the work specifications.

We educate our employees to think and behave safely at work and go home safely.

SELECTED PROJECTS

Project 1

Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall displacement was detected soon after construction.  The face panels detached, and it seemed that the alignment of the wall skewed.  We went through the design basis, design records as well as construction details thoroughly trying to discover root causes.  The wall was constructed in an area where high compressible soils are readily available however granular fill had to be imported. The design of the reinforcement was on the liberal side, and the entire project was on a tight and aggressive schedule.  The foundation condition based on preliminary geotechnical investigation results deviated from the actual condition when that was exposed after excavation, and the treatment of the subgrade did not support the loading sufficiently.

Project 2

Caisson foundation recommendation and construction monitoring: The project included installation of pipe supports for approximately a mile. We performed geotechnical investigation, foundation recommendation and CQ/A construction monitoring. Based on the variation of the soil condition, the length of caissons were adjusted accordingly. We also provided recommendation and construction monitoring for low headroom auger cast piles of various diameters and micropiles with sockets in the vicinity of the same project area.

Project 3

US20 and railroad cross section improvement investigation project in Fort Wayne, IN.  It was reported that the railroad crossing failed and then was re-built about every other year, much shorter than the normal service life of rail road.  However, another railroad crossing which was located approximately 200 feet away performed well for at least 10 years.  A thorough geotechnical investigation, groundwater and surface water monitoring program were planned.  The reasons of excessive settlement were detected and recommendations were provided to the owner of railroad company to rebuild the cross section to increase the service life of the intersection.  The intersection was then re-built and improved.
